Magnog's first, self-titled effort -- the only album the band recorded and released as such -- is as perfectly descriptive of American '90s space rock as anything else released during that decade. With a creative trio in place, its members often playing more than one instrument over the course of the sessions, the group drew on everything from. Admittedly, it wasn't a previous screening that lured me into picking up "Magnog's" debut LP. On the contrary I had never heard of them until that very moment I saw it in the cd bin. With a cover that looked "spacey" and a font that smacked of Macintosh's default font - geneva; I soon found myself holding it in my hands and reading the song /5(20).

Magnog (another Kranky outfit) tends to get a little long-winded and sleep-inducing, but they have a cosmic flavor to their music that I enjoy. Similarly, Transient Waves (that relocated to Philadelphia in time to have an excellent track put onto Lounge Records' Psychedelphia compilation) does just what their name suggests gradually shifting.

Magog is a superhero. A descendent of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, David Reid is a cybernetically enhanced super-soldier who wields a powerful energy lance. He first appeared in the Kingdom Come (Volume 1) Elseworlds miniseries, as a violent, modern foil for Superman. He was later reintroduced in the pages of Justice Society of America (Volume 3). As his name is from the Bible, his name is tied Missing: Lost Landing.

My favorite cuts on this CD are 1 ("Lost Landing"), 3, 5, ("A Moment's Seam"), and 8 ("Loom"), especially 3, ("Learning Forgetfullness"). Terrific at creating soundscapes here that are at times both top-and-bottom-heavy (massive depth within the bassline and percussion mated with phased, expansive, and occasionally searing, pitch-bent guitar) at once, these shorter songs manage to suspend time 4/5(4).

Long-running British group Amp have occupied many sonic territories since first surfacing during the early '90s, including space rock, dream pop, ambient drone, and trip-hop. The group's sole constant member has been Richard F. Walker (aka Richard Amp), a musician, engineer, illustrator, and designer who has also released solo material credited to A.M.P. Studio. Besides Walker, the group's Missing: Lost Landing.
